Brent Johnson, a graduate student at East Carolina University studying Construction Management, is conducting a survey for his capstone research class and can use your help. His research seek to identify the advantages of construction management software and to identify potential reasons why residential contractors have not implemented such software. Once his research concludes in December, a copy of Brent's research findings will be distributed here in NCHBA's Monday Briefing.

OSHA's Construction Site Silica Rules Take Effect September 23. Are You Prepared?

Previously delayed federal regulations regarding the exposure of construction site workers to crystalline silica are set to take effect in North Carolina, and the rest of the nation, on September 23rd despite strong opposition from both the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA).

These new rules will create burdensome requirements which are designed to drastically lower the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of crystalline silica for the construction industry, require impractical medical surveillance of construction industry workers, call for extensive and costly recordkeeping processes, and place restrictions on certain construction site work practices that contradict existing safety procedures.

    You're Welcome! - Teri

Phillip Ray Gibson, NC Radon Program Coordinator
Division of Health Service Regulation, Radiation Protection Section
North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services

Radon is most likely going to be more of a topic of discussion in your community in the coming months.

I am writing to offer myself as a resource, a point of contact, a presenter to you and your members.

I am attaching the brochure that was created with and for the NC Real Estate Commission as a part of their new curriculum on radon.

I am also providing the link to the booklet that shares the role that builders can take to include radon resistant measures in the construction of new homes. Creating a radon resistant home may be an additional $500-700 versus installing a system post construction, which may cost $1,500.
